Origami: Redefining Real Estate Agency Design

A Unique Fusion of Architecture and Interior Design

Origami, a stunning project by designer Kris Lin, revolutionizes the concept of real estate agency design by seamlessly blending architecture and interior work. Inspired by the art of paper folding, this design transforms an old building into a brand new space, both in terms of aesthetics and functionality.

This project, located in Xiamen, China, started in January 2009 and was completed in July 2010. The challenge was to repurpose an existing building while retaining its original structure. The design team, led by Kris Lin and Jiayu Yang, decided to knock out all external walls and windows, creating a blank canvas for their innovative vision.

The entire concept of the design is based on the art of origami, which involves folding paper to create intricate shapes. In this case, the building itself is wrapped in a cortex with the shape of origami, completely transforming its appearance. From the facade to the interior, irregular surfaces resembling origami folds form the walls, ceilings, and outer facade, creating a cohesive and visually striking space.

The materials used in the realization of this design include oak wash ash veneer, rock beautification cement board, Lyme board, Jazz white marble, and metal bead curtain hidden frame glass. These materials not only enhance the aesthetic appeal but also contribute to the overall functionality of the space.

With a total area of 5600 square feet, Origami offers a unique and immersive experience for visitors. The irregular surfaces create a sense of dynamism and movement, while also providing functional spaces for various activities within the real estate agency.

Origami has garnered recognition and acclaim in the design world. In 2012, it was awarded the Silver A' Design Award in the Architecture, Building, and Structure Design category. This prestigious award is a testament to the exceptional expertise, innovation, and artistic skill demonstrated by the design team.

Origami represents a paradigm shift in real estate agency design. By seamlessly integrating architecture and interior work, Kris Lin has created a space that not only captivates the eye but also enhances the overall experience for visitors. This innovative design showcases the power of creativity and imagination in transforming existing structures into something truly extraordinary.
